I was there in 1966, before I went to Vietnam the 1st time.
It is approximately 38 miles North of Barstow, California.
When I was there, it was 38 miles of nothing. It is very hot in the summer, in the fall and winter months, it can be cold. Sometimes in the summer, especially at night, the
temperatures can drop down into the 50s and in the daytime, they can go up into the 100s. Death Valley
National Park is approximately 30 miles NE of Ft Irwin.
Ft Irwin is now the US Armed Forces National Training
Center. It was a pretty good post. The On-Post Housing
was excellent including the troop billets. There is lots of field training, day and night.

Its about technically 45 minutes away from the nearest town Barstow and it is kind of depressing from what I hear because you drive from the highway and you can see the main gate from miles away and you are doing like 90+mph cuz there is no one out there and than you finally reach it.
The installation has everything you need because access is so limited or not available at all. They got movie theater, large shopping place, its like a town really. If you are going for a training rotation than you wouldnt really see much of it. As with all major military installations it is a self sustained town. I had a superior officer stationed there straight out of college, single, he went to either Vegas or LA area every chance he got, they are both like 3-4 hrs away. I know guys that get to go home and visit parents and stuff if they were from CA originally because they have weird work schedules theres due to the nature of the work/training on the base, and they get 4-5 day weekends, and such once a month or so.
You will get housing on base almost no matter what, regarless if you are single or married unless you are there for TDY or short assignments than if they are completely booked than you have to drive to Barstow all the time.

Fort Irwin has three seasons:
The "I cannot believe it is this hot' season.
The 'I cannot believe it is this cold' season.
and the
'I cannot believe the wind/dust storm is this bad' season.
About the only thing I can say about the area is that it is a good place to 'get away from it all.'

It is out in the desert, about 135 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Very hot in the summer, and cold in the winter. Not much out there, except the town of Barstow and the Calico Ghost Town. If you like dirt biking or off-road vehicles, you might like it. You are also about 2 hours drive from Las Vegas.

It is in the Mojave desert. It is used to train military folk to fight in the desert. There is a nice display there of former Soviet artillery and armored vehicles.
They used to have military personnel dressed up as aggressors. They were called OPFOR. They would attack various U.S. military units engaging in war games.
I was there three times. I got to fire several Soviet weapons, including AK-47, PKM machine gun and the RPG-7 rocket propelled grenade launcher.

I have been there twice for Reserves training, and I guess the best answer I can think of is, "I'm glad I am not stationed here." All in all, it wasn't that bad of a post, it's just out in the middle of nowhere.
