Since every person is different, what might be good for you, may not be right for someone else.

This site if very, very helpful. You can either take the quiz I direct linked you too, or click the "all breeds" at the top of the page and read about each dog. (its alphabetical and easy to use)

Hopefully this will help you make your choice!

The Neo is the largest, best family companion and protector!!!!!!
I have a 7 year old neo, his name i Dante. He is 31 inches tall at the shoulder, and he weighs 190 lbs. He is underweight, because of very bad arthritis. He is the most devoted friend and protector I have ever knew. I have had a hundred dogs, all breeds, and this I can promise, if you don't mind a "little" slobber, the neo is the one you want. By the way the neo is also the original mastiff, (breed hasn't changed in over 6000 years) and the Dogue de Bordeaux, is just a "french mastiff". Do a search for Neopolitan Mastiff, there are several very good sites that will tell you all you want to know about Neo's. Good Luck!!!!!

Hope these websites help:

Neopolitan Mastiff:
http://www.dog-names.org.uk/neopolitan-mastiff.htm
http://www.everythingneo.com/
http://www.neorescue.net/abouttheneo.php
http://www.neapolitan.com/ (Really long webpage, loads of photos & lots of links at the bottom.)
Male ones may not tolerate other male dogs ... bit large to try to control if they decide that they're going to see that other dog off!

Tosa Inu:
http://www.dog-names.org.uk/tosa-inu.htm
http://www.dogguide.net/tosa.php
This one is probably not recommended ... it was originally bred as a fighting dog & so would not be the best around other dogs.

Dogue de Bordeaux:
http://www.dog-names.org.uk/dogue-de-bordeaux.htm

http://www.dogguide.net/dogue-de-bordeaux.php
http://www.thevinyardbordeauxs.com/dogue_de_bordeaux.htm
http://www.dogue.co.za/site/awdep.asp?dealer=5621&depnum=8733
Though some of the sites do warn that the male Dogue de Bordeaux can be aggressive towards male dogs - they all say that they are excellent with children. This is the breed that was in the Turner & Hooch film.

Obviously, you need to make up your own mind & I hope that these sites help.

If it were me, I'd go for a Dogue de Bordeaux ...even though they do seem to be great slobberchops!

Look on the web..

We do have a English Mastiff. Why do you want a big dog? Our you going to get it as a puppy? You will make sure this big dog has proper fencing? Training? If you are not experienced trainer go find a trainer and pay them.
Our mastiff is about the neatest dog I have EVER been around. I have been worked with etc. with a lot of different breeds of dogs. This one now that he is older I can trust him with kids. With of course supervision.
You HAVE to realize when owning a big dog if this dog is even playing with a child you will have much more damage done then if the dog was a littler dog such as a lab. You can get suede over this playful nip, or falling down of the child! You can not let this dog out on the street and expect others just to walk up to your dog and cuttle him/her. People are in general AFRAID of big dogs. They are curious and they draw a lot of attention but when it comes right down to it if a 179 lbs dog is running after you what would you do??
Not only this do you realize dogs of this size EAT cars! We are not talking a little damage here! Furniture, houses these are just chew toys to these big dogs until they get either trained or grow out of chewing on everything, if that is they do stop. One reason people get these dogs then can not keep them.
When these big dogs go to the bathroom, do you realize big dogs do not have a little accident LMAO!! Ever own a horse? Then you may adapt.
How big are you? I am a normal sized women. This dog (and our Saint Bernard) out weighs me. When these dogs get riled up (or get into a tiff) I step out of the way. If you have breakables good luck keeping them in one piece! You have to train these dogs. Heavens forbid if your dog is not fixed!!
Food let talk about the food bill!! The biggest bag of dog food every week! So what over $100- $200 bucks a month on food. Do not let big dogs go hungry!! We have more then one dog so half that. Your counters are in danger so you can not leave food on counters or tables until the dog is trained (big dogs do not jump to get the food they just walk over and take). Bathing a big dog, this is a JOKE! If this dog does not want bathed, I can not pick him up and put him into the bathtub...He goes limp, meaning dead weight. We have to take him to the creek (we do not have a pet store and would HATE to have to take him to a dog bather. If they would take him ?).
Vet visits. Vet visits are not so bad for us for the dogs know our vet and love to go in the truck (yes you can not put a big dog in a family wagon and expect your dog to ride well) we bought a suburban. If the dogs did not like the vet good luck!
Tennis balls are like candy drops, they are gone within minutes if the dog is not trained.
OK hopefully you have prepared your home for a big dog. We must of put in five grand or so in fencing and gates. Lord knows how much fixing things around here! Buy home owners insurance!! Trust me go do it if you do not have it lol!
If you buy a big dog expect to have it forever, not many people are set up as we are for big dogs. These dogs do not have much hair so if you are thinking of keeping it outside and it is cold where you live well....cops will more then likely be at your home for neglect unless you go out and buy a heated shed or something?
Thank goodness ours are trained now and all grown up!

Good luck with your choice of big dog! Watch the movie turner and hooch with Tom Hanks our mastiff is bigger then that one! Check out the picture I put on of our regular sized Australian Shepherd pup with him on our 360 page....
