My friend told me yesterday that she was told plasma tv's were going to be phased out. Her source is someone who sells tv's. I've been researching the pro's and con's to plasma versus lcd and never came across this. Is she just blowing smoke or is there some truth to her response? If that's the case, then why should people even be buying them? It just doesn't make any sense!

Perhaps your friend meant tube type tv's. These indeed are being phased out (I think by 2008!).

Plasma is a relatively new technology that will not be phased out for some time I assume.

I would buy a plasma any day over the LCD TV's that are being sold now. LCD technology still can't compare to plasma, dollar for dollar.

The thing with plasmas is the fact that once that the gas over time starts to lose its vibrance. So, instead of you having a tv for 10 or 15 years and then it konks out. You have your plasma for lets say 5 or 6 years and the colors start to fade and the picture gets worse and worse and finally it will just run out of that gas. Then that tv is trash. With the LCD's you can replace the bulb and probably be good to go.

Plasma is a current technology and I don't think there has been any indication of them being phased out. I don't think that's true at all.

No, but you might want to consider an LCD for other reasons. Just my opinion...
