As you have rightly mentioned in the question,First and foremost need is to develop an open eyes to appreciate good work of art. While studying a work of art do not allow the mind to wander out to compare with some thing else. Books will help to understand the Artist to some extent. But, for me, the inner happiness I derive out of the the work of art is my guide. Words cannot express this. No need to get outside help to understand this. That will be some body's understanding not mine.

I found the best way was to study Art History and Humanities at university.
There are many courses you can enrol on but, if you don't want to make that sort of commitment, try reading a good art critics works. I like Simon Schama's books on Rembrandt and his current "Power of Art"

Hey Kesz,
In college they call it art appreciation, if anyone stays awake in the lecture hall and reads the gigantic book, they get a good appreciation for the masters, and styles.
Here are some sites that will help you with the History, Styles, concepts, etc.
