The temperature dropped and I thought my car door was frozen. The key will only go partially into the lock. I put de-icer in the lock but the key will not go all the way in. Any suggestions?

most likely one of the tumblers in the lock is frozen. try heating up the key and then insert it into the lock cylinder. if that doesn't work than it is fairly cheap to bring the car to a vw dealer and have them remove the lock cylinder and replace the tumblers.

The tumblers are frozen. You may have the old style if you never replaced them. The new style has a drainage hole in them as this was a common problem.

I just keep an old hair dryer in the garage and use it to defrost the locks when this happens - usually once a winter. I also put WD 40 or spray Silicone on the door locks to prevent freezing. It does eventually wear out.
