Everything associated with Christendoms Christmas celebration is derived from paganism, as are all their other holidays, including Easter, Halloween and Valentines Day.

Pagan customs include Father Christmas, natural decorations (like trees, holly, wreaths) and I think real Pagans called it Yule (hence the Yule Log, etc.). If the northern hemisphere there has long been a celebration at this time to get together with friends and family before the cold weather keeps us in our houses. Traditional gifts for Yule have been candles (to illuminate long nights), warm clothes (if you didn't get at least 1 warm garment for Yule it was said the Yule Cat - something like a tiger - would devour you) and boardgames or cards to pass the long dark winter.

When ever a conqueror has taken over a people, they want the old people to convert to the new ways - but it can be very hard to budge people from their religious ways. So, Christianity seemed to say We will all celebrate on this day, but we will celebrate jesus - which was smart. Now everyone can celebrate their own holiday but appear to be celebrating the holiday of the ruling people - you see? These holidays combined for political reasons and they remain combined today.

Peace!

Here's a couple: Jesus was not born in December. His mass day (Christmas) was set to coincide with the Roman Saturnalia to make it easier for Romans to transition to Christianity.

The Christmas is not Christian at all. It is a holdover from Germanic Pagans who worshipped the gods that inhabited trees.

You mean besides Christmas NOT being Christ's birthday? It actually occured sometime in April, I believe they've discovered. And that it was a stolen pagan (I believe roman specifically) holiday to convert pagans to the christian ways?

Many Christmas customs and rituals date back to Babylon.

The use of the evergreen tree all decorated, and Yule logs are just a couple.
