You are looking at things the wrong way. If you were to ask any of the guys in the UFC or professional kickboxing or whatever, they would tell you that fighting is just how they earn their living- like a boxer. They learned to fight along with all the reasons why they should NOT fight. These guys, and most other martial artists, do not go around proving themselves by whipping everyone who looks at them wrong- even though they probably could if they wanted to. The only time they fight is when they are in the ring or when they are forced to and have exhausted absolutely every other possible solution.
Bottom line- don't learn how to fight. Learn how NOT to fight.

Most learn through getting into scuffles as kids, where usually the worst that would happen is a black eye or busted lip. You can learn martial arts, wrestling, boxing, etc... but in reality this will do you very little good in a bar fight or a street fight. Most fights are over in a matter of 15 -20 seconds, and you do not have time to stand back and aim your punches and kicks as martial arts teach. Being a good fighter is a matter of determination and motivation. Most people cannot fight effectively because they can't control their "fight or flight" response. They are overcome with adrenalin and usually just swing wildly or try to get the other person in a bear hug and go to the ground. Power, determination and a natural aggression are key to coming out on top in a fight. A street fighter will win over martial arts 8 times of 10 because the street fighter has been in fights and has learned how it feels to get their butt kicked.
One good thing about martial arts is that it teaches you to maintain control. When that drunk in the bar starts swinging wildly, maintaining your control will allow you to back away from the reach of those wild punches. The other guy will either get frustrated, whereas there goes all his composure, or he'll hit someone else, a chair or a wall or something. By maintaining your composure, you have the opportunity to land one or two solid shots while he's swinging wild, and usually that's all it takes. Someone is going to break it up before it gets past 15 - 20 seconds.
Best thing to do if you find yourself in a confrontation that has the chance to turn violent is to find a way not to have to fight. But if you must, just get in there and go to town with all you got. Keep in mind, as kids we may get a black eye or bloody lip, but as adults, you can end up seriously and permantly damaged, or dead. It's a lot more serious as adults. Treat every fight as a fight for your life, because it just may be.

If you want to get extremely hurt, mortaly wounded, or see God... pick a fight with someone on the street. If you want to protect someone or yourself buy a gun, learn how to use it, and lock your doors. If you want to learn how to fight there is only one way. Learn the basics and practice. You can find a various books on martial arts, but go to the kids section and look at the books with many illustrations. You should be able to find--not buy--a few detailed instructions on the proper way to form a fist, along with other various hand strikes, and you should be able to learn proper kicking techniques. Be sure to do these are correctly as possible...in other words. Practice is not mere repitition, it is a sincere effort to make each repitition better than the last. After a week or so of practicing for 20min. Sincerly!! You should see your form becoming more effective, and less chaotic. Then start working on making it clean, after that work on speed, and then power. Before you know it; you will be ready to defend yourself. PLEASE, avoid looking for a fight.
If you are not a fan of reading. I am sure you can go to a martial arts school for a day. Do not sign a contract! Unless you are completely convinced that school is for you. Once you are at the school, ask the instructors there about the proper way to form your hand and the proper way to kick. THIS IS NOT A JOKE. If you develope your strength, and not you hand form...YOU WILL BREAK YOUR HAND. After conversing with the martial arts instructors. (NOTE: Even the students will have valuable information.) You can show them what they are saying to verify that you understand, and then practice at home. Sincerly.
BEST OF LUCK.

True Martial arts are about self-defense not fighting.
I learned by joining a good school and practicing daily.
We do kumite, this is what you may be thinking of when you envision fighting, and yes we do that on a weekly basis.

jump in with two feet, you need to get in a lot of fights to learn to fight, but you can also do things like wrestling and boxing, which help you think about whats going on in a fight and what your opponent is going to do next that will help in fighting
