with any cork bottle you should store the bottles on their side, because the cork must stay moist, otherwise when you open it, parts of the cork will fall into the bottle, and that is poor presentation of the bottle.

as far as the temprature, champagne should be chilled, when it is served, i do not believe that the bottle needs to be stored cold though just on its side to keep the cork moist and serve it chilled.

Champagne can be stored in wine cellaers but is best served when nice and cold. Yes cork should touch the liquid if it has a natural cork it should be stored with the neck tilted down to keep the cork wet and tight fitting. With the modern plastic corks that is not necessary.

Champagne and sparkling varietals should be stored at - ideally - 55°F on their sides like all wines - chill well - to at least 38°F -prior to service in a tall tapered flute for optimal effervescence. Cheers!
