For dogs who eat it too fast, and some toy dogs, it causes a blockage in the intestines. also, if manufactured in another country, it may have dangerous chemicals, so only use the unflavored, (or naturally flavored ones) made in USA rawhide shews, and go easy on them, so the dog doesn't get a bowel blockage..Get them foorm good reputable sources, such as a trusted pet supply shop.
Here are some articles concerning the chews>http://www.doglogic.com/rawhide.htm
I didn't let it scare me off, but give them less liberally..

They are bad if the dog chews them in chunks and not into bits. Also, some can upset some dogs stomachs. Of course moderation with any treat (and that is what a rawhide is) and the dog should be observed when chewing on one to make sure it doesn't gulp it down. It's good for the teeth but I believe there are better alternatives to rawhides.
On the human side, rawhides splinter and some come dyed which can leave splinters of rawhide everywhere for you to clean up and the dye can stain your household things.

Well, it's ;like this, Mc. Donalds is bad for people like raw hides are bad for dogs. People say that raw hides are bad for a dogs digestive system, but I have never had a dog that it has bothered. I have 3 dogs and I have had several before the ones I have now. Raw hides are good for cleaning dogs teeth. :o)

Most dogs eat rawhide with no problems... HOWEVER... it CAN break of in chunks and cause blockages. Pet stores sell it for the same reason they throw nuts, seeds & food-colored tidbits in rabbit food (even though nuts & seeds are not good for rabbits) and why they sell treats that contain sugar and even cocoa for dogs (VitaCraft Yogurt bites for example) despite the fact they shouldn't have either. Such things in small amounts aren't THAT likely to cause trouble, so they get away with it... and pay an occasional lawsuit.
If you want to give your dog something to chew on that is tasty, good for their teeth, and long-lasting... buy natural bones. They sell the "smoked" kind at the pet stores, but you can also buy raw bones in the butcher department of most grocery stores (generally sold as soup bones or dog bones). Look for ones that dont have small pieces that will come off easily (so look for nuckle bones, shank bones, etc that are mostly one large chunk). Dogs LOVE 'em and will chew on 'em for WEEKS. The fat & meat is off the first day and my pet nutritionist (who runs a high end pet store) assures me that it doesn't "go bad".

I don't know why it is bad exactly, but I know whenever I fed it to my dogs on an empty stomach, they would throw up. However, my dog that never eats raw hides has quite a bit of tartar, so it must clean teeth really well.

It is ok in moderation. Be sure to carefully supervise your dogs with it though because swallowing large pieces can tear and block their intestines. When the piece gets small enough to fit in their mouth take it away...don't hurt their feelings though...give them something like a bite of hotdog or cheese when you take the rawhide away.

The only problem forseen about rawhide is that after it is chewed and becomes hard the edges become hard and can potetially harm the pooches gums I hope this helps I for one dont seem to mind giving a dog rawhide but do try to smooth it out(although very gross) after they are done chewing on it

no raw hide is not bad for dogs. they digest it the same as anything else they eat and it helps keep their teeth clean in the process.

All natural are OK. Some dogs will swallow big chunks and can cause stomach problems.

It has been my experience that rawhide is GOOD for dogs, and I have nineteen of them. I give them rawhide all the time. It is good for their teeth and keeps them from boredom.
