Sorry, but your dad is wrong on this one. Trying to deal with the other driver directly is the long and messy way to deal with it.

You file the claim with YOUR insurance company. You let the insurance company worry about sorting out fault, etc. You do NOT have any direct contact with the other driver!

Read your insurance policy and their instrucions on what to do when you are involved in an accident. One of the things that they warn you about is making contact with the other driver. If you say the wrong thing, you may wind up without any insurance coverage for the damage to your vehicle.

When you exchange papers after an accident, the drivers are not required to provide phone numbers. It's a good idea to NOT give the other driver a phone number, actually.

Your dad gave the WRONG information. You were rear ended, the police and insurance company should have been notified. You also have the right to go to the police after the accident and report it, give them the information including the data on the person that hit you. Be hit from the rear is not a chargable accident for YOU.
If you would have been injured I bet your DAD would be looking for $$$$$.

You can locate the person by taking the driver's license number, license plate, and insurance info to the DMV or police station. However, talking with your insurance first is probably better.

your dads an idiot no offense, call the police and report it before it falls on your shoulders, you can be in trouble for not reporting and accident, not just by the insurance company

good luck
