From a baker's standpoint, I know that they are not cheaper. There is more labor involved with centerpiece cakes so the price goes up somewhat, although most bakers overlook this fact.

What are your feelings on them, from the standpoint of both a bride and a guest? Would you rather have traditional centerpieces or the cakes?

Also, if you have seen these done before, how did they go over?

I think it sounds like a neat idea in theory, but as a guest, I probably wouldn't eat the cake. If it's sitting in the middle of the table with the guests sit down, then people are talking over the cake (some people spit when they talk) and breathing all over it more than they would one large cake. With the large cake people can see it from where they are sitting and maybe walk by it once, but don't converse and eat so close to it.

From the standpoint of a guest, I would hate it. See, when guests sit down and see the centerpiece, they think to themselves "oh how pretty." Then they push it out of their way so they can talk to guests on the other side of the table. This is why low centerpieces are good. But they won't be able to push the cake aside like this. And they'd be nervous of accidentally bumping it or something.

Your reception costs will also go up, as they will have a lot of cakes to cut instead.

I have seen a tray of mini-cakes done before. They were cute, but not like they were all that.

From a bride's perspective, I wouldn't go for this either. I loved that my centerpieces were cheap and easy, and we were able to set them up the night before. It was nice to only have to worry about one cake rather than lots of them.

My friend did this for her wedding over the past summer. It was AMAZING and beautiful, because they were used a simple centerpieces on each reception table. And delicious! I didn't mind at all, and thought it was more tasteful, and easier on getting the slices to the guests more quickly without having to wait. Everyone loved it.

She did have trouble finding a bakery willing to make that many cakes. No one believed she was serious about wanting individual cakes, and the well-known bakers kept attempting to push her into getting a traditional, three-tier wedding cake. She finally found someplace small that made exactly want she wanted, and she was thrilled.

Cake centerpieces would be nice for you and your guests since you could walk around to each individual table and cut the cake. This gives you time to personally thank them for coming and could replace your receiving line if you would like.

I've never seen anyone do that. You can order mini cakes for everybody to have, but those are expensive too. I think traditional centerpieces are nice, and then one large cake.

Cakes as centerpieces are a great way to cut flower costs and show your creative side. Each cake can be decorated differently, or they can all match. Half can be different flavors or each can be different. Having different cakes can promote talking between tables, especially if someone wants a different flavor, etc.

I, personally, wouldn't like this. I wouldn't want someone sneezing on my dessert. And if children are there, it's soooo tempting to sample the icing from every cake there.
