I would be willing to bet he didn't go outside much when you weren't home.

Absolutely, and often. If he has been used to going out whenever he wanted using the doggie door then I suggest you now keep him in a crate until he can get use to holding his potty needs until you get there to let him out. If possible, train him a little at a time via the crate. Keeping him in a 'room' where he can go wherever he wants won't help him to become trained in holding it.

It's very simple - Take him outside when you first get up in the morning - making sure you praise him after he does his "business"- and then again when you first get home in the evenings - again praising him when he does his "business". It should not take more than a week to "retrain" him provided you seal the "doggie door" securely.

Cockapoo's are pretty smart dogs. I don't believe any training will be required. You might try asking him if he wants to go out in an excited voice and get him excited, too. Take him out right away. He'll get the idea to come to you in an excited manner. If you watch for the signs and be sure to take him out immediately, he'll probably train you. :)
