Why should I respect someone who does not respect my beliefs? This is open to everyone. I have seen it asked here, and off line, for me to be respectful for someone's beliefs when they have just insulted mine. So, why should I? Why should I extend a courtasy that will not be returned?

Should I do this if I am Muslim? Christian? Pagan? Wiccan? Atheist? Or should I disrespect anyone who does not respect me?

Wouldn't it be better if we all respected each other? We may not agree with each other's beliefs, but if we want respect, we should give it instead of going, "but doesn't respect me". Someone has to stand up first. Will it be you?

Mutterhals, that's kinda the point. I have shown respect for other religions, and tried not preaching here, but I see hatered all the time. Why should I continue to respect anyone when they don't respect me?

How about you and I start respecting each other and hopefully everyone else will see how good it works and they'll catch on.

I'll start. Hi I'm Maria and I'm a Witch. As long as you're not out to "save" my soul, you're cool in my book.

To quote an old religious phrase known as the Golden Rule...
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" or another more earthy one "Don't come down to another's level". If you have been disrespected in your beliefs by someone, instead of going off in a huff and being hurtful back, ask why and see if it was just some misunderstanding. Forgiveness is, I am told, a key factor in almost any religion and even aethiests espouse a belief in the innate goodness of human beings. So, give the person a chance. Email, etc. is very impersonal, you cannot hear voice inflections or body language, etc...Forgive and help to educate if that was the problem. Yes, we should all respect one another's beliefs, but until that happens, practice your OWN beliefs in such a way that you cause no harm to anyone else, including yourself.

Because by respecting someone of a different belief you show that your belief is stronger than their shallow opinion of you. At the end of the day it is you who must live with what choices you made in the day.

Jesus adressed this issue, "love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more then others? do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heave is perfect." God loved you while you were still a sinner, and He still died for you, go and do the same(not the die part but love others as He loved you). However, if you are born again it is still your duty to share the truth.

If you set your mind to disrespect someone or their beliefs then you would only fill yourself with bitterness. As for someone who disrespects your beliefs, that is their problem- not yours.

Because I believe in good hygene and grooming. I wouldn't think twice about someone who disrespected my beliefs or someone who believed that hygene was over rated. I figure if thats what they are into, far be it from me to concern myself with their beliefs. The same should apply to religion and spirituality. You can remain completely neutral towards those who do not beleive as you and those who do not respect what you believe.

The actions of others should not influence the way we know we should act.
Others show disrespect ....that does not give us a valid reason to also show disrespect.
We must soldier on doing right even if we are the only one on the planet.
Because right is right.

I try to keep respectful because I'm really doing it for myself, not anyone else. If I behave disrespectfully, it conflicts with one of my core values, and doesn't hurt the other person much at all.

You will be a better person if you don't retaliate in kind. It is a cycle of "pay backs" that keeps war going. Be kind to ignorant people, whatever they're beliefs.

Respecting each other doesn't work. Just look at the history of man. We just can't do it.
