It is very honourable what your doing so don't look as it as a negative thing, but the only way for her to blossom is to confront her fears just like having a phobia.
By protecting her your holding her back from ever moving on from her shyness.
Your doing a good thing but it needs to be at arms length for her own good, be there as support but don't butt in when she's struggling, let her get there on her own and compliment her when she does or even if she makes a mess of it.
I used to be very shy as a young teen and now have no problem talking to 500 people in a conference, shyness is learnt, your not born shy and all she needs to do is 'unlearn' it.

There's probably more something wrong with you than wrong with her! There's nothing wrong with being timid and shy, but don't smother her. She will have to learn to manage. How old is she? If she is 13-20 then she will get older and learn the ways of the world. If she is 21+ then don't worry, she's managed so far!

I believe that if she has been okay all her life up till when you met her, then she is going to continue being okay.
so yes you are being overly protective. I would not worry about her too much, She has survived this long so she is not completely helpless..

She's lucky to have a friend like you.Just slowly but surely persuade her to be more forthcoming. That should do the trick. You'll have to be patient though. But that's what friends are for.
