Well, black women live in a culture where long, flowing, silky hair is the standard of beauty by which all women are judged. Long, straight hair is seen as lovely--and most importantly--feminine.
Most women of African descent do not have this type of hair and it is difficult for them to grow it to the lengths that women of other ethnicities can. Therefore, in order to have the type of hair that is seen as most beautiful, black women wear wigs or have hair weaved into their own (or if they can grow a decent amount of hair) they will chemically staighten their hair.
Some of us also like to cornrow our hair with extensions. Personally, I look forward to the day when african hair in it's natural state is more mainstream. When we see prominent black women like Oprah and Condi and Beyonce willing to wear their hair natural then perhaps black women will stop wearing their weaves in order to conform to a beauty standard that really has nothing to do with us. Hope that answers your question.

Many black women wear wigs because it's much easier for them to get the look they want that way. Their hair doesn't grow straight and is hard to straighten once it's long, so it's easy to keep it short and then get a wig for the right look they want for work, going out, or whatever else.
Another thing that a lot of black women do is get hair extensions. Usually women who do this have grown their hair out and straighten it all the time, but it takes a long time and a lot of constant straightening to keep it very long. What's easier at that point is to get a weave or hair extensions. This way she has her own hair but can make it the length she wants without having to wait for months for it to grow out, constantly straightening and treating it the whole time.
Probably more black women do this than white or asian or any other women, but it doesn't mean that only black women do it. I know that many Hasidic Jewish women have a shorn head and wear a wig in public, due to their religion. I know also many roman catholic nuns keep a shaved head and many of them will wear a wig if they go in public without a habit on. But also many women do it for other reasons. I had a friend who was Norwegian and happened to be VERY beautiful. For a few years, she kept kind of short hair, dyed platinum blond, kind of a "new wave" look. She certainly looked hot that way, but very "edgy". So for work she wore a wig. It was brown hair, shoulder length. I couldn't tell for the longest time. A lot of the women at work could tell though because I guess women look for that kind of thing, especially when they are looking to criticize a beautiful woman. Anyway, it was easier for her because she didn't have long hair to wash and had the look she wanted for going out but then could have the look she wanted for work, to look more professional and conservative. (She later did grow her own hair out.)

Perhaps these be-wigged women don't feel their hair is how they want it, and a wig provides the thickness and style without the frustration of having to style it carefully every morning.
I haven't seen a trend at all; nearly all the women I've seen wearing wigs are Caucasian and Asian. I guess I don't live where you live, where it may also be a fashion trend, as well.

It's usually because african american hair is usually really dry, kinky, and fragile, it looks stiff when it is straightened and can be very time consuming to style. Usually they will get extensions or wigs because it is less time consuming and they can get the look they want easily.
When my hair was short I wanted to get extensions or a wig too, because it just to difficult to grow your hair out from being really short, and I was friends with a black girl who's hair always looked so cute because she had a ton of different wigs and extensions.

Black women's hair can be very time-consuming to get it looking nice. It is also very dry. Sometimes it's easier on the hair to wear a wig, rather than straighten it with chemicals and hot irons. And it is a quick fix for those days that there isn't enough time to fiddle with it

I think women of all races look like they could have wigs, extensions or hair pieces attached to their heads.
Take a look at almost every single woman on TV with long hair, they are wearing extensions. They are of African decent, Latinas, Caucasians, Asians....did I miss anyone??
I see lots of old people who's hair looks like a wig....what's up with that?

Why is your avitar wearing a hat...because you think that it looks cute, right? and this wig thing you think is only for black woman? Have you seen any pics from white Hollywood lately....nobody has their real hair, get a grip. Do you have fake nails? I thought so, now stop worrying what every one else is up to.

Nothing is "up with that". Not all black women wear wigs. People are allowed to wear what they want.

Notice how you said "seems." Not all are. My hair is long and it flows. White people always think it's fake. Catch my drift? There is a bias.
