Religious influence is pretty much everywhere in one form or another. Hatred of non-believers is the biggest danger of all this, not Nativity displays in a public park or whatever. In America, there is officially no state religion but you would hardly know it from the rhetoric some Godly people in high places utter.

That is a very broad question. Religion is part of human society, and pretty much always has been. The human species feels, as a whole, drawn to the need to worship a Being beyond themselves in an organized, ritualistic manner.
Religion in modern day United States society (for the most part) has become a bone of contention and a source of hate and manipulations instead of love and generousity.

Religion does a lot of good in societies. For many it is a way to understand the world. Who has the tiem to learn everything they can about physics, philosophy, and the arts? Religion encompasses all these things with easy to understand, digestible explanations.
The danger is not when religion is used for good, or to explain where a loved one has gone after they die, (called description) but when it is used in an opposite way (called prescription), such as when a religious leader says 'we should vote such and such a way.'
religion there fore is usefull, keeping some people from stealing, killing people, whatever. But for others, atheists and agnostics specifically, the use of religion to decide matters of state (like faith-based initiatives) is a dangerous road. Unfortunately, and many christians will disagree with this, giving us supposed 'moral clarity' gets us into situations like the war in Iraq. "Staying the course" connotes religion, not diplomacy, which is the difference I mentioned above.

I think that religion is a good thing in general as long as everyone is tolerant of others' beliefs. And that goes for evolutionsts as well. When people arent tolerant of other peoples view, that is when trouble begins.
