eat more fruits and vegetables. natural sources are always the best source of fiber. laxatives or such work, but may cause nutrient deficiency, and should be used sparingly. any fresh fruit or vegetable will offer the fiber along with vitamins and minerals. Canned or preserved fruits and veggies may provide the fiber, but may not have the vitamins and minerals depending on packaging and perservation techniques (flash frozen foods typically retain more qualities than others)
whole grains in breads and cereals will also help, but fruits and veggies are better sources typically
note, getting regular exercise will also exercise your bowels. sitting all day or bed-ridden people will often be constipated.

As I don't like to put all the fiber foods into my diet each day (I would be eating all day) I like to use a fiber supplement. It is easy, keeps you regular, and gets your daily requirements. Also look into some whole grain cereals like Fiber 1 etc. They taste good in yogurt and make eating fiber not so bad.
You will notice a big differance right away as well.

there are many great sources out there. one of the best is the cereal All Bran. Other good sources are whole grains (oatmeal,) fruits and vegetables. then there is also the supplements such as fibercon, citricel and so on. good luck and if these dont work talk to your dr because something else might be going on.
