Why do you think it is flat?
Columbus knew that the earth was a sphere, that's why he sailed west to get to the east... oh, yeah!

He didn't. Actually no educated person at that time thought the world was flat. The argument was about the size of the world. Columbus thought that is was smaller than it is.

Ummm, Columbus DIDN'T think the world was flat, although many of the crew members of his ships did. It was a common belief in his time.

I would assume he was taught that. It was a church belief, likely to keep the flock closer, so they denied the scientific concept that loss of sight was only due to a curve, not a drop off.
Had to keep the people scared of leaving or they would lose their cash flow.
