i made a macaroni salad that called for 1 cup cider vinegar. to me, it's too vinegary tasting & smelling. i want to tone it down a bit, what can i add to counteract it some?

You should start adding either white sugar or honey (I would start with sugar)....just a little at a time until the vinegar taste has mellowed. You might want to add some grated lemon rind to help with the vinegar taste and smell....you could also use lime rind instead.

add either sugar or honey - the base pH of those ingredients will counteract some of the acid pH in the vinegar. or, you could try adding a little salt, as it too has base pH. however, it will likely not reduce the "vinegary" flavor in this batch by much. next time you make the recipe, try lowering the amount of vinegar by 1/3 and see if that is more to your taste. also, taste the dressing before you mix it in to the salad next time, as it will be easier to correct before it is incorporated with other ingredients.

Sugar and 1 cup??? unless you were making tons of salad it should be more like 1Tablespoon

Since macoroni and vinegar are so inexpesnive...I would simply throw out what you have made so far and begin over using half the vinegar this time ;p
