Opearations are scary and not just for kids, and it's o.k. to be scared. I had a major operation 7 months ago and I was absoloutly terrified although I never told anyone except the head surgeon.
In the months leading up to the operation I had 2 needle biopsies done on a lump about the size of my heart which was in my salivary gland. The first one was easy, a good spray of anesthetic in my mouth and a very small needle, didn't feel a thing, but then the second one was a core needle biopsy. After a good spray of anesthetic he said "I'm going to inject some as well other wise it will be a bit painful. Now I won't lie this was sting and burn quiet a bit o.k." My response was to shut my eyes and open my mouth. I didn't feel the needle penitration but I definatly knew when he had started injecting and though it was stinging like mad I just took slow deep breathes and tried not to think about it. After he withdrew the needle he couldn't believe I wasn't in tears and then as the biospy needle apporached my mouth I almost refused to open up because from my angle it looked like the size of a pen barrel. I did open up and it was the strangest feeling I had ever felt, it didn't hurt, but I could every move of the needle. Anyway when he finshed poking and prodding me I thanked him for doing his best in not hurting me and he said "No, thank you, you where very good about this." and I said "Lets see how I am when it's time for the operation."
His reply "You a bit nervous?"
"Let's make that absouloutly terrified." He then listebed to by concernes and explained exactly what would happen before and after the operation which enabled me to get a vaugue idea of the unkown.
On the big day, it took 3 aneathatists to get the IV line in, because my veins like run away, and I thought it was really funny because they all thought they were hurting me, but all I felt was the odd pinch and sting and then as they wheeled me into the operating theatre and I thought "This can not be happening" and then once they hooked me up to all those machines my heart rate went through the roof, but after spotting the surgeon I calmed down a bit and he said to me "Don't worry, we are going to take good care of you" and he gave me a wink and then as the aneathatist placed the mask on my face the surgeon held my hand and then I went out like a light.
I think the worst part is waking up with half a dozen people hanging over you and telling you not to talk because you have tubes sticking out of your nose which usually only happens when you have surgery near the airways.
So in answer to you question make sure you explain your feelings to the surgeon and other medical staff and they can give you a pretty accurate description of what will happen. Don't worry about the pain aspect after the surgery because they have many drugs and other methods of making you as comfortable as possible. As for the needle thing, DON"T LOOK and keep your mind focused on breathing. When having a needle stink of any kind I close my eyes, take slow deep breathes and try not to think about it, if I was to see it I would be about the door in seconds.
Sorry this is rather long answer but I hope it helps.
Good luck

Ask the doc for something to help calm you down before the surgery. They normally give you something when you get to the hospital and get prepped for surgery but ask him for a script you can take the night before or with one sip of water first thing in the morning. Also if you are that worried call and set up a time to either come in to the office and talk about the surgery with the doc or with his nurse and they can tell you what to expect.

i have had many operations, I have brittle bones diesese. The only thing that scares me is when i wake up i get really light headed. Its not scarry at all when they give you anastesia all the doctors start to look like ghost as you start to fall asleep. its not that bad but you get kinda cold. its okay to be afraid its absolutley normal. just breathe and tell them when your ready they won't do anything without your concent first. i hope for the best and hope for a good out come. email me at chiyo1988@hotmail.com

well the good thing about operations is that you get put to sleep anywayz therefor it's not like your going to fell whats going on.
I have a huge needle phobia and seriously u just have to breath and inform the nurse that u have this fear and they will let u lay down and just close your eyes and think of something else.

I know how you feel. The hospital will give you something to help keep you calm when you get there if you are feeling anxious. Take a friend with you. Stay away from caffeine. Wish you luck, it always seems worse than it is.

Ask them for some medicine to help calm your nerves. You'll just be thinking how good you feel once the meds have hit you
