One deals primarily with production, the other deals primarily with design (pre-production).

Automation is an interesting field.

A suggestion would be step-up and go for a full-blown engineering degree, if you are able, instead of just a technology degree. When I review resumes, I lean towards engineers, not ET's, all other things being equal.

Mechanical ENG. deals with Thermo (heat--->to energy) also they deal with drafting experiments.

A CIM deals in creating a computer for consumer's, building the system like I believe a Computer Science- although they are in modernize computer. They over look the whole system in the process.
