I've used this recipe for over 30 years.....tastes great!
KAHLUA: (makes 1/2 gallon)
1 quart vodka
1 oz. instant coffee (KAVA)
4 cups bar sugar (super fine)
1 vanilla bean
distilled water
Add instant coffee to 1 cup of boiling water and stir until dissolved. While water is still hot, add 4 cups sugar and stir until dissolved. When mixture is cool, add 1 quart vodka and stir. Pour mixture into 1/2 gallon container. Add cool water (recommend boiled or distilled water) to bring level to 1/2 gallon. Add vanilla bean. Cap and let stand for 2 weeks.
(Use a good brand of Vodka to start; 80 proof. KAVA Instant Coffee is BEST: has less acid)
