My experience as I am a foreigner living in UK over 7 yrs.
I think your first step should be 'working as a carer in the Nursing home' for the start, there are many Nursing Home that look after elderly people need staffs and also have scheme to train their staffs to get a higher qualification, if you already be a nurse then it much easier, and it will be much easier if you use English as your first language.
But there are many options widely opened for Doctors and Nurses in UK.
Good Luck for your New year 2007 :-)

You would need to have a 'registrable' qualification to use the titile 'nurse' in the UK. And you need to check with the Nursing and Midwifery Council ('Google' that one...) to see if you actually have one that is acceptable.

But that not may be enough. The UK National Health Service has placed severe limits on the acceptance of non-British nurses because there are now many unemployed nurses - particularly newly qualified ones.

Working as a nursing assistant or (as we say) 'health care assistant' in NHS hospitals is also not easy; numbers have been cut dramatically in recent times, and jobs are not easy to find.

Similarly, agency work in hospitals and nursing homes has also been markedly cut back, and the 'Good Times' of 3-4 years ago, when health care jobs were plentiful, have come and gone. Supply now exceeds demand in most areas.

I recently searched the internet for job vacancies in the NHS for staff nurses in the clinical setting of 'medecine'. There were just 2!!!! (3 years ago? - Thousands!!!!).

Sorry not to be more hopeful - but you are competing with thousands of qualified nurses spilling out of training colleges the length of Britain - and for the foreseeable future, NHS Trusts have been ordered to give them priority... So I would definately think twice before coming here without a job...

Have you tried ringing NHS Professionals in your area?

I work for them, I can go to different ward & units without being restricted to a specialised field.
I'm an HCA (Health care assistant) which is what you call a nurse aid.
NHS Professionals can train you through NVQ's & you could even qualify as a registered nurse one day...

I am not in the "health" industry,(I just looked on the net)
You could try

nurserve.co.uk
nursefindersuk.com

I think that they may be agencies.

Please be carefull,These may be ok,but a lot of "agencies" do not put your interests first.
