It has to do with the allowance of light through the glass. Light affects the ingredients in the beer. if the bottle is green, it's letting more light through than a brown bottle, and less through than a clear bottle. Light will affect the taste of the beer.

Light reflects the taste and age of beer and wine; Why do you think that certain wines are definitely bottled specifically-that goes the same thing with beer.
The best beer is sold in green or clear bottles rather than “plain brown” ones.
In the years following World War II, in part because there was a shortage of brown glass, European brewers shipped beers in green bottles. It became a status symbol for imports. The color of the bottle no longer says anything about the quality of beer inside, and as we’ve written before green glass gives less protection against beer becoming light struck and developing a “skunky” taste.

Heineken introduced the green bottle when it started importing to the USA. Its colour was purely to match its brand colour and at the time, it was not known that the green bottles deteriorated its beer quicker that the standard brown bottles as more light was able to pass through the glass. However, it was such a differentiator and success at the time, no one dared change it. Today, the colour is still used and has become an unofficial colour to mean imported beer. Other manufacturers have followed suit to copy the "imported" colour.
However, when you visit the Netherlands and other countries that have a strong recycling policy, you wil see that most beer are in the brown bottles. This is because it is easier to recycle and reuse brown glass than green.

Colored glass bottles protect beer from light, both sun and artificial. Light shortens the beers shelf life be as it does wine. The color brown or green is now choice but at one time would depend on where you were located at. The local best local bottle maker made green or brown or blue glass. Brown does work a little better but green is OK and some like it's looks.

The only real reason for using green bottles instead of brown is marketing. One example of this is Heineken. It was largely unknown in the US, or even out of Holland for that matter. They switched to green bottles for exporting and that helped give the beer a look that stood out from the others, and Heineken became an extremely successful export. In Holland, Heneikens come in brown bottles (last time I checked).
Either green or brown bottles help protect the beer by shading it from light.

Brown bottles protect beer from sunlight the most(sunlight breaks down beer). Beer in brown bottles has very few if any preservatives. Green bottles let in a little more light so there are a few preservatives. Clear glass lets it all in and requires the most preservatives. Corona has been shown to have traces of formaldehyde in it! Bottom line is brown glass costs the most. Green is middle of the road and clear is cheap.

most beer sold in green bottles is imported - and generally European. American brewing companies that use green bottles were usually started by brewers that had immigrated to this country, and they used what they had always used. American brewers tend to use Brown bottles, probably a result of the original glass bottles blown here used readily available colorants. There is no scientific reason for either color choice - the color of the bottle has nothing to do with the flavor or longevity of the beer itself.

I think its something to do with the light ,the green glass stops light from altering the taste of the beer, the same as brown glass is used sometimes

As you probably know, all beer is kept in colored bottles. It is to preserve the flavor(yuk) of the beer. From my understanding, the darker the container, the longer and better the flavor.
