When

Allah says, as related by the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, 'O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another.'

Hence, those who tend to oppress women do it only out of their own selfish greed and not because they are being ordered to do so by Allah. On the contrary, believers are warned against such propensity: "O ye who believe! Ye are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should ye treat them with harshness." (Quran:4:19)

Never minding what it says in the Quran, it is actions that count not words.

Islamic law does not treat women and men equally. Traditions in Islamic countries do not treat women as equal to men.

Women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to drive, in Iran a woman can't go to court to prosecute a man for rape unless she has 4 male muslim witnesses, in Afghanistan under the Taliban women weren't even allowed to leave the house to go to school or to get medical attention, in northern Africa many muslim women have the genitals cut off to stop them from enjoying sex. Until these sorts of practices are eliminated, Islam will continue to be associated with the oppression of women. Only Muslims can resolve this issue.

Christianity traditionally doesn't treat men and women as equal either.

Baby Gurl, our society goes pretty much by what we get from the media and I'm not talking just bits and pieces of stuff, but actual interviews by Muslim women. These women are saying horrific things the Muslim men have done to them. These women are giving us text from the Quran as you have done.

It's the same for us that believe in God - men are not supposed to abuse women, but there are those that do not believe and abuse their women. Even some Christians are sinners. For example, my sister married a man in church. He was also a friend of my first husband. This man beat my sister on a regular basis and we never knew it until he beat their six day old baby. The bible preaches against this, yet he did it.

So do not be surprised that we have this mental note in our minds because no one has come forward to change that.

There was a male caller on the Muslimah Dilemma programme 3/12/06 at 19:00, he was saying "that this is a strange world, you 3 sisters sitting there are wearing hijab, but mothers from other muslim families take their girls to the mosque after school, their little girls wear little scarves but the mothers do not wear anything, no cover" this man is supressing and depressing women. what does he means by that? do men want to take women rights away? i thought we had rights to choose whether to wear it or not. why are men getting involved and telling women what to do?
does he think they weren't wearing any clothes?
why should they wear a head cover if they're only going to drop their
children to the mosque but not going in the mosque themselves?
if they do go in mosques themeselves i'm sure they cover their head.
how would you feel if someone says this to you and calls you an improper muslim?
what about the women who pray, give charity, fast, and do everything as a muslim should,
except they choose not to wear a hijab?

Dear sister, there is a difference between verses from the Quran and how islam is being practice in the world. Are you from Saudi Arabia? How about from Afganistan when the Taliban ruled? Why not try migrating to Saudi Arabia for a change? Do you think you would feel oppress? Please sister, there is a REAL concern regarding the PRACTISE of Islam around the world and that PRACTISE is what people are commenting about. Recently, Parkistan just changed their rape laws to allow biological evidence to be used in court, yet such a ruling angered the fundamental islamic clerics there. You and I are just ordinary muslims, but look at the islamic leaders and their laws in the middle east, then ask the question.

Lol good one. I had a similar one about equality of women and men in islam, but people STILL had bad stuff to say about it, EVEN THOUGH i showed proof from the quran.

Edit: And to most of you, i think she is trying to say that islam itself is not oppressive to women, even though some people do oppress women. But the religion itself is not oppressive. It is mainly cultures and stuff which cause people to act this way.

I know theologically it doesn't - but it is the misintepretation of Islam by others is the reason why women were or are oppressed.

Its like the festival of Christmas - a invention by the council of Nicea to convert pagans to Christianity - the bible does not say that Jesus was born on the 25th of December - thus CHRIST's MASS is a Catholic invention.

When I see a lesbian intellectual Islamic woman invited to lead prayers at her mosque, then I will have some hope for women under Islam. As it is, the "privilege" that every muslim women has is the privilege of being in the slavish, ignorant, misogynistic straightjacket of feudal religion.

People tend to judge on what they see & when they see a woman dressed head to toe with only a slit for their eyes they tend to see a restrcited person instead of what it actually means for the woman & her religion.

With a little more understanding & acceptance I think we could all begin to realise not everything is quite what it seems.

If that is the way Muslims want to live their lives then that's up to them, I do not have a problem with it.

MEN oppress women.

Some of them have used Islam as an excuse to do so, others have used Christianity, others Judaism, others some non-religious pretext. Some men find they don't need an excuse to oppress women at all.
