Know any at home games for kids aged 8-11?

I have four kids here, 2 boys 8 &11 and 2 girls both 9. What are some games we can play, they have been outside for 4 hours and are bored. What can we do?

First off let me congratulate you for the strength and courage to deal with four children so close in age. Anyway, I am a believer in utilizing your surroundings or killing two birds with one stone. Housecleaning must take some toll on you, why not incorporate it into a fun game.

1. Make a board/chart similar to a peek a boo setup with a listing of all housecleaning chores-(of course those allowable for the age) on top and undernearth a point system for that particular chore.
2.The children are to pick a chore and do the chore to find out what they won or how many points they recieved.
3. Allow the points to pay off with some reward after they increase, like frequent flyer miles.
4. Allow for one of the chores to be an instant prize/or whatever you decide.
By doing this you can get you housecleaning done and play with the children at the same time. You might can get some R&R as well. This concept can work with any idea as well too. Have Fun!!!

I keep board games for "rainy day" activities. Some good ones that my kids (ages 7 and 8) love are Cranium Cadoo, Monopoly, and Operation.

If you don't have these on hand some other games to play that are fun are charades or pictionary. You can make your own by having each child come up with things for the others to act out or draw. You could also get creative and make up an indoor scavenger hunt for your kids....that should kill some time!


Another activity -but not a game- my kids love to do is to bake something. Cupcakes are fun, because they can decorate them however they like.

If you want inside games [since it is winter] you'll have to invest in some. The ones my son likes are scrabble jr, pokemon yahtzee, trouble, and monopoly and clue. You can find these on ebay. Well, I did anyway. My son is 8 so they are the same age group.

Or you can do some crafts such as painting. My son paints outside. We live in the desert so it's pretty warm most of the time, although we've been having a cold snap.

Could you get them a pet? Such as a puppy, it's a lot of work, but I just got myself one and my son loves to play with him. That may be a bit pricey though. I found the pup on the side of the road bleeding and hungry.

Take printer paper and markers and fold up paper airplanes. color them and fly them around the house ( that's about a half hour to 45mins of fun). There are webpages with instructions on how to fold them.

Mix up a batch of cookies. Give everyone a chance to measure different ingredient, mix, etc.

Get a deck of cards and play go fish, old maid, etc. heck teach them to play 21 (they can practice adding) and bet using pasta.

anything with construction paper, scissors and glue.

for future maybe...one of those activity tables that go from foosball to mini-pool table, etc. All four of them can play foosball together. If you're limited on space there are some smaller ones under $100.
