If the cat is scratching so hard that it is throwing the litter out, you could get a litter pan with higher sides. You might have to buy one with a cover and just don't use the cover. Puppy training pads are good too. If you put one of those tucked under the front of the box, the cat will leave the litter on the training pad when it walks out. You just pick up the training pad and dump the litter back in the box. It is easier than trying to shake out a carpet all the time.

Vanessa,
The cat tracks the litter with there feet, no matter what kind of box you use they will still track litter on to the floor. Your best bet is to put a large rug under the litter box. This will catch the loose litter and all you have to do is take it out the door and shack it once in a while. This works good, thats what I do.

Take a box that is bigger than the litter box and tall enough so that your cat can still get in but not so short that it does no good.
Cut the top off the box but not the bottom, fold the bottom flaps out and put a brick on each flap or anything heavy enough, this is so the cat won't push box around. This worked for my cat. Good luck.

Cats have a sixth sense when it comes to knowing when their clean litter box has been cleaned, and they will make a run for it to use it!

My cat used to do this, and what we did was get a bigger litterbox with higher sides, it took some looking around to find a bigger one, but we found one. Problem solved.

Maybe use less litter. At the SPCA where we adopted our cat, the cages hold a small litter box with minimal litter and the cats seem to adapt and work with it.
