I have a black lab mix. She loves to be with us, no matter where we are, she loves to swim, she loves chasing squirrels, she loves to go for rides in the car (especially to Grandma's house), she loves to go for rides in the boat, she loves going for walks, she loves playing with our other dog, and she loves it when we get on the floor and play with her at her level. She just LOVES everything. One thing I've learned about Labs is that they are generally happy dogs. (As opposed to my terrier mutt who has an attitude, is not happy about everything and has no problems letting us know when something bothers him).
She's just a joy to be around and you can't help but smile when her tail wags so fiercely that she almost knocks herself over.
She is mixed with German Shorthaired Pointer though and she has a protective side. We have to be careful with her when she's around men (in particualr) that she doesn't know. I think that trait may be more the Pointer though. We had a couple Pointers growing up and neither were friendly to strangers.

Our chocolate lab Dawson is 9 years old and you couldn't ask for a friendlier dog. He's great with our kids and all of our other animals. Loves to swim, go for long walks and rides in the car. He doesn't like hunting, he's afraid of the gun but is a great retriever. We really just wanted him for a pet. His health has been great, no problems so far in fact most of the time he acts like a young dog.

A close friend of mine had a chocolate lab who was the best friend of my dog.
I have noticed that they are territorial regardless of size, will attack and defend any other size dog, are usually very sweet natured and sweet tempered, tend to like semi-soft dog foods such as Kibbles and Bits, need a lot of exercise, tend to be very obedient, are very easy to house train, have problems with cancer and arthritis in their later years, are very suspectable to heartworms (need to keep up on this all the time), and dont shed very much.
