To understand islam, you have to read the Quran. However, you cannot read just the Quran and draw your own conclusions about Islam. One has to read the Quran in the right context set in Muhammed's (pbuh) life. To do that, one can use the biography of Muhammed and the various Hadiths, collectively called the Sunnah. A Hadith is an oral report from Muhammad or his companions.

Ishaq’s Sira, or biography, called Sirat Rasul Allah, provides the earliest account of Muhammad’s life and the formation of Islam written by Ibn Ishaq in 750 A.D.

Next, the history of al-Tabari called the Ta’rikh, written by Abu Muhammad bin al-Tabari between 870 and 920 A.D, is the oldest, most trusted and comprehensive history of Islam’s formation and Muhammad’s example.

Al-Bukhari’s Hadith, titled: Sahih Al-Bukhari - The True Traditions was collected by Imam Bukhari in 850 A.D.

Sahih Muslim, the last hadith to read is written by Imam Muslim, who was a student of Bukhari.

Read them all.

Thank you brother for your refreshing comments.
Burger King- how many atrocities has the Christian commited in the past, and where were the apologies for that? I speak English as my mother tongue today because in my country the lovely Christians decided to colonize, like they do with so many other Arab countries. I will not apologize for people I dont consider Muslims. When 99 Chrisitans drank poison and all died together because they believed that Christ was returning soon- did Christians say "These are true Christians"--- no.
So when people say Muslims are terrorists- that is not true.
The terrorists were "muslim" but not ALL Muslims are terrorists.

yes , i do believe islam has been misunderstood by many people..and yes i do believe in the remedy..
however, muslims should live the way of Islam inthe present context with the references of the past.It is sunnah to follow Muhammad's way.Indeed, but the way we follow has to be adapted into the present living conditions..

back then Muhammad rides a camel, now we have cars, back then muslims prays in rows of tight safs..that is due to the fact that muslims do have enemies back then, and imam is the leader, thus , saf protects the leader from the attacks, such examples are good to follow but it must not be follwed without knowing the true essence and meaning of such actions....

muslims have hadiths for them to adapt..based on the stories of few...Quran states the general, covering all aspects of life, but it is up to us to intreprete it...hadiths helps in guiding us towards that way.the correct way of Islam...that explains why christians has only bible to follow...and muslims have hadiths...but remmber, hadiths are not the equivalent of Quran...

it is a matter of guidance..to help us Muslim..

the idea of muslim terrorists that go against the teachings of Islam...they may have their reasons but it may be the consequence of following blindly into the past..without knowing the lessons of our past Islamic leaders..

i hope my answer helps

Thank God Christianity needs only one book, and that book is the word of God.I've seen enough about Islam where I cannot give the benefit of the doubt any longer. There is no correct context exept for the fact that the Quran is demonically inspired. You can count on that.

I'm from Indonesia. I'm not a Muslim, but I do know that many moderate Muslims are good people.
They are different from those radical Muslims who use religion as a tool express their radical views. The government here is democratic government and, i'm glad, that it doesn't support those radical Muslims.

Why don't you stop killing people in Allahs name and protest the Terrorists like you protest the US.

Then maybe it won't be "misunderstood".
