I'm not really sure the whole answer to your question, but from the article quoted here, it seems as though the answer depends on how much money your household makes.
"Rising income also means more dining out. Restaurant dining and takeout food accounted for 41% of food spending in 2003, up from 21% in 1960.
Rich and poor allocate the same amount of spending-about 5.5¢ of each dollar-on away-from-home meals, according to the bureau's latest Consumer Expenditure Survey. But share of food budget devoted to dining out increases with wealth. The poorest fifth of families spent one-third of food budgets on away-from-home meals in 2003. The top fifth spent slightly more dining out ($4,535) than eating at home ($4,503)."

I'm so sick most times I don't eat or feel like cooking but my mom sister and me cook almost every night.1 time a month we order chinese food.Sometimes when our days are really busy we just eat sandwhiches and chips or microwave something but this only happens about 4 times a month.

Every night. Aside from the 1-2 times a month we're tired and uninspired and order out.
