i have a 75 pds black lab and it loves and i mean loves to lay in front of the fire place till it is panting and drueling im not sure why he does it. Does any one else out there that has a dog that does this or know why he does it, only thing i can think of is it feels good on his old bones he is 7 years old. Sometimes he will lay there right in front of it for 15 mins till he is burning up and i will have to yell at him to move.

I have a dog that does the exact same thing, he is a nut and I have come to accept that he will never change his behavior..he will always be a nut

awww, that is adorable! I have a black lab too. She likes to lay in front of the kitchen sink, I have no idea why. Your lab probably just likes to lay by the heat and keep warm. My lab won't go near the Fireplace b/c she can see her reflection in it, and it freaks her out. LOL My other dog is part lab and he will lay in the sun for hours! to the point that his black coat gets a brown tinge.

He probably likes the heat on his body but, a word of warning. Dogs do not burn like humans. The burn from the inside out instead of on the skin like we do. What happens is the blood vessels underneath the skin start to die along with some of his flesh. It takes about a week to start falling off but, before he will be very tender to the touch and pustules will appear. This also happens with hot water, hot oil. or touching something that is hot. Also, if he stays to long near something that is hot and does not touch it but, stays long enough for the heat to cook his skin like from a fireplace or hot muffler. Believe me you do not want to go through this. My vet bill was over $1,000 and I almost lost him. I had months of expensive therapy of changing bandages and running cold water over him to keep the skin soft twice a day.

I have had dobermans for about 17 years and all of them do the same thing.
My first male would lay in front of the fireplace and get so hot you could not stand to touch the dog. He would pant but many times not move.
They have higher body temps than humans and the heat must feel good to them.
My weims do ont do it but all of my dobermans have done it.

He might be sick or just old.
