I have half the amount needed for free fllight--and just want to lower the price of my ticket. Is this possible?

No. You need all the miles to get a free ticket. I think you can only use your miles if you buy the ticket and use them for an upgrade to business or first class.

However, sometimes you can split the miles up - like use fewer miles for one leg (like the super saver miles) and then use more miles (like Flex-Miles) for the return leg if there are not flights that day with Super saver miles. - Or use fewer miles for one way in economy and more miles for return in business class. I never tried - but you can at least call and ask if you can use miles for a one-way ticket for 1/2 the miles - then pay for the return portion.

You can't trade the miles for a discounted rate but some airlines will let you cash in the miles on a voucher, for example a $50 award you can apply to the fare. It's rarely worth it, though; the amount you need for $50 is pretty close to the amount you need for a free ticket.
