Im doing a research paper on the war in iraq. Basically, my paper is about the war adn if it's worth everything were doing for it. I mean our soldiers are dying and being wounded by the day. Im going to be one of those soldiers next year. Im joining the marines and I would like to know if im going to die when I do. I don't have a problem with dying for my country, but I do if it's going to be senseless. I want to know if what were doing is justified. How much of our goal have we accomplished? And when will it be over?

First of all, I wonder why you want to be a soldier when the govt. is abusing and using them for insane wars. My father's generation was proud to serve, they felt they were fighting a noble cause. My generation got sent to Vietnam on a mission designed to fail, and got abused twice, once in the jungle and also when they came home. This generation is being used the same way. If you want to know when it will be over, when we have a President who cares more for soldiers than his own reputation and pride.

Yo! Future Devil Dog. When will the U.S. leave Iraq? If the Syrians, Iranians and the Democrats have their way, soon. Very soon. Here's a news flash for you. You can die a "senseless death" anytime, anywhere regardless of what you are doing and whether or not you've joined the Marine Corps. My God-Son enlisted, I helped push him through at MCRD in San Diego. He went home on leave, got drunk, hit a tree and died. A senseless death. Patton once said of death and war: "You don't win wars by dieing for your country. You win wars by making the other poor, dumb bastard die for his!"
Is this war justified? Ignore all of the political spin you've been pumped full of and remember this. Saddam invaded Kuwait on 02Aug1990. Several years earlier, President Reagan reflagged the oil freighters traversing the Gulf because of the Iran/Iraq war. Saddam's invasion was an attempt to hijack the world's leading supply of crude oil and to gain a larger port. Coalition forces were brought to bear and the world's 5th largest army fell. The U.N. sanctioned a cease-fire agreement and then later would not uphold that agreement because the U.N. was/is corrupt and was accepting bribes from Saddam. Months of diplomacy failed to get Saddam to back down and the U.N. to stand up and do what was right. Someone had to do something to rectify the situation. Was it justified?
Is it worth it? I'm assuming you're referring to the number of reported deaths there. Here again consider that in WW I, the average monthly death toll was 98,000 men. The battle of the Somme saw the instant inhiliation of 200,000 in the first hour. That battle raged for months. In WW II, Patton drove his 3d Army across France after the D-Day Invasion. Patton lost on average 1,000 men per week. We've come a long way in our warfighting capablities since those days. Please remember, that regardless of which news service you watch or listen to, each one has an agenda. They are in the business of making money and they do that by targetting specific audiences and telling them the "news" they want to hear. Rarely ever will you see any of them tell you the whole truth or about all of the good we've accomplished in Iraq, just the doom and gloom.
"And when will it be over?" We're still in Japan and Germany 60+ years after that war (WW II) ended and we're still in Korea. There is no solid answer to such a question. As in war, where tactics change, so too will our objectives change. They will change with each election and whatever the news media pumps us full of.
Once you become a Marine and have earned your Eagle, Globe and Anchor, it will nolonger be for you to worry about the given politics. your's will be to obey the "Lawful" orders of your superiors and follow the U.C.M.J..

It's all going to depend on what happens. It's also going to depend on where you're stationed. You may not go to Iraq (although statistics says you will). I don't think this whole mess is ever going to be over. We'll pull out eventually but I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. There's too much instability and it'll only get worse if we leave. We ousted Saddam (One goal) and put a democratic government, although the goverment there now doesn't seem to be doing much good. It's difficult to say how much of our goal has been accomplished but it either will be accomplished or we'll pull out when all hope is lost.

If you're allowed to use blogs for your paper, here are a few:

costrorum.blogspot.com (Soldier's blog)

messopotamian.blogspot.com (Iraqi civilian)

Hope this helps!

until the job is done. but the question is, what job. if you want to fight for your country I would say, join a home guard where you protect your soil from invaiders. I joined a "home guard" but luckily it was only for a short time and we dont have any wars so I was lucky :) in the UK the TA, is sort of a home guard but have been called to go Iraq too. With some lads who are students at uni and joined the TA to be in the army on weekends only went to war and died. Basically if you join an army, feel that you are living life on borrowed time and if you survive its a blessing. War sucks but we need the brave to protect us. Its a shame that its the few that decide which wars we fight. and they dont always make the right choices.

good luck and may whichever god you follow bless you. hope you make it and hope your friends do too,.

Only the future will answer if what we are doing now is worth the cost. I have served 5 years now and been deployed, and will be deployed again this year. Can I answer your question, not honestly, maybe no one can. Have we accomplished our goal? What was our goal to begin with? When will it be over? Who knows..

well, from what i understand some troops may be removed in 2008. Unfortunately, the US will never leave the middle-east alone and we will always have troops there and the american people will have to continue to sacrifice for the agenda of the few who control the most dangerous military and government in the world.

(oh yeah, "mission accomplished", remember when George W. was on the aircraft carrier with the huge banner claiming "mission accomplished" over 16 months ago. and what was our goal anyhow? remove saddam, impliment democracy, fight the war on terror. i believe the goal is yet to be determined or we just keeping making it up as we go.)

Well, with you thinking it's senseless, don't join.

With people thinking this war is senseless, you're saying those troops have died in vain.

IF you were to speak with a bunch of troops, they'd say it wasn't senseless.

And I doubt anyone would want you getting their back if you thought this war was senseless.
