The cause for anemia or low blood can essentially be broken down into three groups:
1) Blood is being lost (through colon, stomach, bladder, trauma, etc)
2) Blood is being destroyed (such as with an overactive spleen, auto-immune problem).
3) Blood isn't being made fast enough by the bone marrow to replace that which is lost naturally (bone marrow disorders, kidney disease, iron deficiency, chronic inflammatory diseases, etc).

For some elderly people, the actual reason for low blood will never be found. Other times, a correctable problem can be identified and fixed.

Hope that helps.

Maybe her bone marrow is not producing it rapidly enough now.
