Lower back pain becomes common. Best is to ice for 15-20 minutes followed by heat (15-20 minutes), then ice again, heat again, and end on ice. Ice and heat laying down with your legs elevated. When icing, try to strecth i.e. bring you knees to your chest and focus on relaxing those back muscles.

When you back starts to feels better, I would recommend trying to rebuild the back muscles you strained as well as developing the opposing muscles, the abs.

Sitting is the worse, so try to avoid. When you stand or lay down, the loads of your body are distributed throughout different areas of your body. Whereas, sitting, the load is distributed in one area, the lower back/tail bone area.

Good luck--

One cannot provide a specific method of relief without knowing the cause of the back pain. There are many reasons back pain can persists, but the most common is muscle related. Muscle pain would require hot packs and pain relievers medication for temporary relief. But to overcome future back problems, a person needs to strengthen the back muscles with exercises and stretches.

Our mattresses play a key role in back pain also. If you have a weak supporting mattress, it will not support the shape/contour of your back. This will lead to discomfort and misaligned spinal muscles. Strong back muscles help eliminate this problem more so than a person without a strong back, But a supportive mattress is strongly recommended.

If back pain extends beyond the whelm of muscle pain, then it is necessary to see your Doctor or chiropractor to determine the cause. They can then determine the proper treatment required.
