How much protein you eat depends on how much you weigh and what you want to accomplish. Assuming you want to lose weight by losing body fat and gaining lean body mass, I recommend making protein 33% of your diet, carbs 50%, and fat 17%. You'll need carbs to keep up the energy demands you plan to place on your body. A good rule of thumb is to eat 1g of protein daily for every pound you weigh. So if you weigh 135 lbs, you should eat 135 g of protein a day.

Much less than you think. The RDA for "average" exercise a few times a week is only 60 gm ... roughly 1 large chicken breast.

Keep in mind that eating protein doesn't equal increase in muscle mass. You have to work a muscle group hard, cause it to "rip" and then protein elements will repair the muscle and make it bigger.

If you don't frequently continue to stress the muscle, you will lose it. A good example are people bed bound in the hospital for several months. When they first stand up they can't. Their muscles weren't used so they atrophied.

Enjoy your workouts, don't over do protein or it converts 40% to carbs ... not good.

Most people eat far too much protein. If you eat to high a percentage of protein your body starts to burn it for fuel instead of just using it as building material. The metabolic by-products of burning protein are toxic and a make the kidneys work harder to get rid of them.

Get your energy from carbohydrates like brown rice, oats, whole wheat etc.

Even heavy duty weight lifters don't need more than 120 g of protein a day. Normal people need about 60 g.

Protein helps in muscle synthesis. But just eating more protein doesn't make that happen. It will just be stored as fat tissue , just like carbs or dietery fat.

When your body produces hormones that bring about protein systhesis, the protein supplied as food will be used to build muscle. Now this condition is caused either by working out with weight intensly or injecting hormones into your body.

So unless you cause the conditions explained above, you should need only 0.3 to 0.6 gms of protein / lb of body weight.

Remember to get your protein from a wide variety of sources and don't focus too heavily on "protein shakes" and other non-food sources. The majority of North Americans get far too much protein (this is why Asian immigrants' children and grandchildren are usually far larger than them!).

I'm going to assume you want to gain weight
then you should aim for about 2 grams of protein per body pound

so if you weigh 200 lbs....400 g of protein is good to aim for

Your weight divided by 2 = # grams of protein.

it all depends on different factors like age, weight, your dietary needs, etc.
i'd guess about 46 grams or whatever
