I have a 9 week old male Boxer puppy, I've been feeding him Nutro (for large breeds) since I've had him (2 weeks). I was told my the petsmart employee it was a good brand to protect against cancers and stuff (which Boxer's are prone to) is that ture or did she just tell me that because Nutro was more expensive then the rest. Money is not a issue concerning the health of my new pup so if something out there is better let me know...

Nutro is an okay brand. Their most popular lines are NOT good quality, they contain primarily fillers - wheat flour, rice bran, and wheat are in the top four or five ingredients of all their products in their Natural Choice and Max lines.

IF you are going to feed Nutro, make sure you go with Nutro Ultra Holistic. It is the only line to contains meat and rice as the first four ingredients.

Personally, if you are going to spend extra money, you should really look for a better quality food. Some of the top foods are: Innova (personally I believe this is the best on the market), Wellness, Canidae, Solid Gold, Flint River, Evolve, Merrick, etc. These foods contain whole, fresh human grade ingredients with no fillers.

As for preventing cancer, well, as both a pet nutritionist and a Health Educator (for humans) I know that the foods that are most credited with reducing cancer risks, are not found in Nutro. If you feed one of the other foods I have listed, I'm sure your dog will live long and happy...note that many cancers are not caused by nutrition.

Anyways, Nutro is okay but don't be fooled into believing it is the best.

Nutro isn't that great. Looking online at the ingredients for the large breed puppy:
Chicken Meal, Ground Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Wheat Flour, Rice Flour, Rice Bran, Dried Beet Pulp, Poultry Fat
These are the fist listings for what's in it. You want the meat to be the first ingredient and you don't want it to say 'meal', this means ground up left over anything. It should simply state Chicken, Beef, Lamd, whathaveyou. Also protein really isn't the main ingredienct since the next 5 ingredients are some type of starch (not good for the dog). ANd they have corn as the 3rd ingredient, also not good. It is best to get a food that has no corn, this is simply a filler just like the wheat and rice flour. Why would a dog need flour? They don't get that in their 'natural' diet if they were roaming around.
A better choice for your pup would be what others have already listed (Innova, Wellness, Canidae, California Natural, Merrick) but a good option for you might be Solid Gold Wolf Cub, which is formulated for large breed puppies. Here's the main ingredients for it:
Bison | Salmon Meal | Brown Rice | Millet | Cracked Pearled Barley | Rice Bran |

Nutro is supposed to make good dog food. I don't know about avoiding cancer, but it seems to be a good food. There's more than one kind of Nutro, too.

My pup is on large breed puppy Nutro Max and he is doing very well on it. It seems to be much better for him than the BillJac that we started with when we got him.

Hope this helps.

I don't think Nutro is a top brand. Best to look for whole meats at the top of the ingredient list. If I recall, Whole Dog Journal rates Nutro low. Check out the website to be sure - www.whole-dog-journal.com.

I just switched my dogs to nutro senior(go to their website for coupons!). My dogs are loving it! they are 9-1/2 and almost 16.

Nutro does not have by-products, corn, fillers or no BHA and BHT preservatives, which have been proven to be harmful to our pets. Although this wasn't my first choice, it was one of my choices and due to availability is why I ended up using this. Actually, my first choice was Flint River Ranch, sounds like an awesome food!! But, I tend to wait until the last minute to buy food, so I choose not to go this route.

Have fun with your puppy! you are feeding a great food.

With puppies it is important to get them off to a good start, unfortunately the better the dog food the more expensive it is, but please put your dog on dried food asap as wet food (canned) stick to the teeth and digestive tract and can make them ill

the best way to choose a dog food for your dog is to first look at the age and breed. Then go look at teh labels of the dog food under ingredients and choose the one that names a meat product, not by-product, in the first one or two ingredients. You dog is a carnivore so meat is best for him, so you want the one with the highest meat content.
