I have had late stage lyme disease for 7 years. I had it for a year and a half (approximately) before they found it, so I had a really bad case. Generally, when people are bitten, the deer or lyme tick have to stay on them for 3 days to be able to get the virus. A bulls-eye rash is often found somewhere on the skin, along with flu like symptoms. I had the symptoms when I first got it, but no rash, so they passed it off as a virus.
If you catch it within 3 months, you can treat it with oral antibiotics and you can get rid of it for good. After that, it gets more complicated. 3 months is the general rule, but some with lyme disease for 5 months may be cured. Usually when it is bad, such as late stage, you are on IV for 6-8 weeks. However, if you have late stage, such as myself, there is no cure and you will have to live with the symptoms for the rest of your life with occasional or common "flare-ups" A flare up is when it feels like you have the initial disease all over again, times twenty...it's painful. I'm in one right now.
Lyme disease affects the nervous system, brain, and heart. I am 22 and will need a heart valve replacement soon. My brain has been affected and I now have three disorders all caused by lyme disease. My nervous system was seriously affected, I have too many problems to name. But lyme disease is serious, so if you think you have it, go to the doctor immediately.
This reply is not meant to be a sob story, but I want people out there to realize how serious lyme disease is. If you don't catch it, or protect yourself from it, you can have serious complications for life.

One sign, which I had, is a sore. It will be red and between 1-2" in diameter with a scaly/scabby part in the middle. I'm not sure about other symptoms, but if you have one like that, get to a doctor.
