My ex bf of 2 1/2 years broke up about a year ago. We live about 2 1/2 hours away from each other. We haven't spoken to each other in about 10 months, and I've asked him not to talk to me because we are too different and he's got a holier-than-thou, you're-not-good-enough-for-me attitude. He thinks he knows everything about everything. The relationship in retrospect wasn't based on love and caring, but rather a friends with benefits scenario, but we weren't that close to begin with as friends. I recently found out that his Mom has breast cancer. I'd like to be a supportive friend to him, but don't know if I should, if it's my place. Advice?

Why would you want to? From what you are saying you really don't like him. Surely he has other friends. You could be supportive of his mom though.

He doesn't sound like a very nice guy. I think you should close all ties with him, as you stated you weren't really friends when you dated him, so why would you want to be friends now. If you want to give him sympathy because of his mom, that's fine. But, there isn't anything there for a friendship, so why try to fake it.

you can if you like. this is tricky. im friends with an ex. sometimes i wonder why i even bother. sometimes he acts strange, like he doesn't want to be bothered or hear what i have to say. im glad we broke up a long time ago. it will never be the same. so be careful if you decide to be friends again.

Send her a card or flowers and leave it at that - why be his friend now?? Show her your thinking of her and praying for her and let it be.
