VW was in our area years ago and when most guys were making 15k, they were making 50k. Then VW moved to Mexico and alot of the guys had to declare bankruptcy. I was looking for employment at the time and because I was not a VW layoff, or wife of VW layoff, I could not get hired even with an education.They retailers tended to inflate the area prices and made it hard on those who were skimping by...
VW lasted in our area about ten years (someone gave tax exemption for ten years) Then they moved on....
Years later...in comes the Sony and now they are selling off and reducing production
Present is ethanol plant (same site area, different company)
Hey, what incentatives did someone give them and how long will they last....

In the 70's, I started working at a VW dealership.I was hired in as a line mechanic. At that time being a mechanic at a dealership was alot different than it is nowadays. Although the wages are still paid on a commission based on the current rate per hour according to the labor book used by most dealerships. Then it was based on 38.00 an hour. In other words, for example if ball joints, according to the labor manual took 6 hours,I was paid for 6 hours. However,If you are really good at it, which I was, I had them done in 90 mins......NEXT JOB PLEASE!!. Not to say I was paid the full 38.00 an hour. NO......... I got 35 per cent of the labor flagged on that job. The dealership got the rest!!! Do I have a point???....YES.....If you can find a good
independent repair shop, that wants to do,and does superb repairs. They are willing to pay top dollar for you. I did that and was paid 50% of the flagged labor!!!!!!!!!!! I was almost making 6 fugues in 1977. I was 24 years old at the time.
