Crash?
What you need to do is run a system file check to repair all of the operating system files. Open a command prompt [Start / Run / command / OK] and enter the command:
sfc /scannow

If the system's i386 folder is not set up or is corrupt, you will be asked for the system install CD. Insert it when asked. If the CD autoruns and want's to reinstall/repair XP, cancel that and proceed witha the system file check.

On damaged systems it's often helpful to run Norton Utilities from it's install CD, or some other registry cleaner to remove orphan entries from the registry.

After you've finshed the above, ask your in-laws if you can remove the toolbars and other junk programs they've probably installed which eventually contribute to taking the system down.

Unfortunately, there is insufficient information in the question in order to be able to provide a good answer.

It sounds like rather than crash the computer, you need to confirm that the hardware operates correctly and then re-install the operating system.

If you really do actually want to crash the computer and it is Microsoft Windows XP, then follow these steps:

1. Run "regedit"
2. Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters
3. Create a new DWORD value and name it "CrashOnCtrlScroll"
4. Right-click on this newly created value and click "Modify"
5. Enter 1 in the Value data field and click on OK.
6. Close regedit and reboot your system.
7. Now you can crash your system by holding the right CTRL key and pressing "Scroll Lock" twice.

I was given a pre-owned computer a couple off months ago, and the previous owner took it to a technician to "clean it out" and then had all his files transferred to his new computer. If it is a difficult process for you to do it yourself, technician fees are not very expensive. I am not familiar with all the technicalities involved so that is what I would do.

Ask to it add and subtract a number at the exact same time, whilst multiplying the result by infinity.

The computer will respond in a robot voice:

"This command is completely irrational. I cannot handle this illogical order, must destruct forthwith."
