You can download Visual Basic Express from Microsoft.

This is the 2005 version, and gives you all same functionality as the higher end editions, Though it does exclude some handy things like the ability to create installers, and some IDE functionality like being able to group and ungroup procedures. If you do download, however, do download the snippets editor; It's a handy utililty.

I'd recommend, if you are a beginner, buying a book with Visual Basic Express included. There are many which start from as little as £16 I believe.

It was and still is a legal download all the lower versions are e.g. educational versions - you will be pushed to find a copy of VB6 but VB2005 is popular. Have a look at C# that is free and up to date
