I see that Martini is a lot cheaper than other drinks of a similar
ABV. Anyone have any idea why

Seems like a lot of people answering this question aren't quite clear on what a martini is...

The basic gin martini is about 2 shots of gin and a splash of dry vermouth, shaken or stirred with ice, then strained into a glass. With or without olives depending on your preference. A "dirty" martini is the same as above with olives and a splash of olive juice. Martini "with a twist" is a basic martini, no olive, with a twist of lemon peel.

Vodka martinis are the same as above, but with vodka instead of gin. A "sweet" martini is only ever made with vodka (just wouldn't work with gin) and a splash of sweet vermouth instead of dry vermouth.

There are a whole range of flavored martinis out there as well (think Cosmopolitan, Chocolate martini, Appletini, etc.) that are made almost exclusively with hard liquors and liqueurs.

The basic martinis are definitely an acquired taste, as they are very strong and generally a little bitter. The flavored martinis are generally very sweet, and most people (who like strong drinks) tend to like them.

As for why they are "so cheap"... your local bar must either have a really great special on martinis, or they are using lower quality (rail) liquor. Top shelf liquor is always the best choice for a martini, as they don't include mixers to mask the taste of the cheap stuff.

I remember the very first time I tasted Martini. I thought I was going to throw up immediately it was so bad. I never understood how people could drink that crapp. I never had another Martini in my life and no amount of James Bond (or other advertising campaign) can make me drink that sewage water and I wouldn't pay money for something like that. I'm sure other people think similarly and only desparate people on a tight budget will drink that stuff.

The Martini advert used the tag-line 'any time, any place, anywhere ...'

Nice girls don't want to associate themselves with slogans like that, so Martini gets ignored (and plus, it tastes like cheap pop ..... or so I've heard).

Smart girls who like the taste of vermouth are generally better advised to ask for a 'Gibsons' (vermouth cocktail) rather than a 'dry martini'.

To the above people - I'm guessing you're American or somesuch. Here in rain-sodden Britain we have a cheap generic vermouth type drink called Martini. And its sister-drink Cinzano. They are both awful things which cheap tarts from Essex drink to appear cultured. They fail...

does it matter, when I was younger it was the drink, I am only 27 now, I mean when I was 19, it was cheap and cheerful, and we all had many a good nite on this beverage, so thank you Martini.

Ha ha - I love Dry Martini with lemonade but it is very old fashioned and very uncool drink to order in a bar. That is probably why it is cheap.

ingesting a martini from a plastic glass might want to be undesirable. The vermouth style might want to be absorbed with the aid of the plastic and launch pollutants. The dry gin might want to change into moist. The bitters might want to sweeten. the golf eco-friendly olive might want to get all discolored and shrivel. it would want to easily be grosser than ingesting a lager that spilled on a bar with the aid of sucking on a paper towel used to wipe up the spill.

cos it went out of fashion and they want people to buy it.

i hear its becoming a new craze though what with the new bond film and all sales have gone up - i hope the price stays the same.
