Well, there can be several causes ranging from a small fissure to colon cancer.

If the blood is bright red (i.e. fresh as opposed to a darker blood that has been around for awhile) the most likely cause is a small split caused by a larger particularly hard bowel movement. Another likely cause might be a hemorrhoid.

If the blood is darker it indicates that the bleeding is likely to be happening further inside and is occurring for a reason other than the tissue being physically torn.

In any case, have a doctor check you out. Most conditions like this require first hand visual inspection to diagnose.

Blood may be seen in any bodily discharge or may appear as undiluted blood. It should always be reported to a doctor. If the blood is from the large bowel or anus, it will be bright red and may be passed on its own or mixed with a motion. If the blood is from higher up in the digestive tract - from a gastric or duodenal ulcer - the motion may be black and tarry because of digestive action. Most common causes are: Severe Nose-bleed or taking iron or bismuth (black motion); Piles (red motion). Less likely causes: Duodenal or Gastric Ulcer, Cirrhosis of the liver; Stomach and Bowel Cancer; Ulcerative Colitis; Polyposis or Diverticular Disease of the colon; Schistosomiasis in some countries.

cool ... along list here is gotta be written
but first of all there are two types of bleeding through the stool
the first one is called melena which makes the stool so dark due to the digestion of the blood by the bacteris in the large intestine of the second one is fresh red blood seen in the stool
and they are both blood in stool but the differnce here is that is the causality
the first one is cause by bleeding from the upper gastrointestial trace and the second one from the lower gastrointestinal trace
and i mean by the upper git is from the pharynx till second part of the deudenum while I mean by the lower git is from the duedenum to the end of the anal canal
but as awhole the most common causes is either ulcers or erosions or diseases in the blood leading to bleeding tendency and or maybe varices ...
and the causes of the bleeding the the lower part of the tract is due to ulcer of inflammatory bowel disease or could be due to tumours or due to the hemorrhoids ...

Dark red can be a ulcer, see a doctor. Bright red can be hemmroids or palps. Best to see a doctor because palps can be an early warning of colon cancer. Palps are like ballons of blood hanging from the wall of the colon.
Was told this by a doctor during a Veterans Affair doctor appointment.

Several possibilities. Hemorhoids are most common. If it's bright red - that's probably it. If it's dark red and mixed in with the stool, consider a colonoscopy or a fecal exam. Dark blood in the stool can be a sign of more serious problems including polyps or colon cancer.

Not usually a good sign. But, it could be hemorroids too! Get a stool test done to rid yourself of the thought that it could be colon cancer!
