A detective is told to go to the scene of a crime in a man's house. When he arrives, all thats there is a dead man on the floor with a gun in his hand, blood all over the floor, a note, and a tape recorder. He picks up the note and its says exactly "I hate myself, I'm going to kill myself." (THIS IS HIS HANDWRITING.) Directly after he reads it he reaches over to the tape recorder and presses play. Immediately he hears a voice saying exactly, "I hate myself, I'm going to kill myself. (pow, a gunshot, a drop to the floor)"

The question is- Did the man kill himself? Explain your reasons if so or if not. Remember to read carefully.

thinking............I should not have to press play on the tape recorder if he shot himself while recording the message the tape player may have still been recording or stopped and I would have had to REWIND the tape. So, NO the man did not kill himself.

No, he didn't kill himself. Someone had to stop the tape when he'd finished speaking and hit rewind, otherwise the tape wouldn't have played from the point at which he started recording.

He coudn't have stopped the tape since he'd just shot himself and dropped to the floor.

The man was murdered.

If the victim had really recorded that message right before killing himself then when the detective replayed the message he would have had to rewind the tape first. The murderer recorded it himself/herself then re-winded it so that they could be sure that the police would hear exactly what they wanted them to hear.

I have to say...that was an AWESOME riddle. It took me forEVER to figure it out. Well done! That was fun!

Probably not. He would have had no way of rewinding the tape back to the point where he started recording (the gunshot that supposedly killed him was audible on the tape). Unless of course he merely mortally wounded himself and died later of blood loss.

The dead man was murdered! He would not have been able to rewind the tape after the gun went off... the detective didn't have to rewind the tape, so... someone else did... obviously.... perhaps a killer? I think so.

Yes he killed himself. I recall a lot of tape recorders that when they reach the end of the tape automatically rewind.

The man probably did not kill himself. There are blood all over the floor. If he shot himself most likely he is standing or sitting, so the blood should be at the direction of the wall.

the tape recorder starts to play his voice from the first,it can be done only when someone was there during the shot to reverse the tape...so i think its a murder...

who rewound the tape recorder. If he shot himself while recording it would have kept recording until someone stopped it.If he only hit play to hear it someone must have rewound it.
