Belief acts strictly as a motivator. All the prayer or ritual in the world won't make something happen, but it CAN focus the mind and thus cause the person to behave in ways conducive to getting what is desired.
If I pray for a man in my life, or do a ritual for the same, but sit at home on my butt chomping cheetos and watching GeekTV or some other computer station, chances are, I'm not going to find my man... but if I've done those prayers and rituals, I'm more likely to get my butt to conventions or techno-savy clubs and wouldn't you know it? There's guys there! And I might meet that one that turns out to be the special someone.
Did prayer or ritual do it? No. I did. The prayer and ritual just focused my own will.

Belief, itself, doesn't have power. What you do with what you believe is what holds the power. I could believe all day long that a project is finished, but it won't actually get finished until I do it.

Is this a question on one's personal beliefs, or that of the beliefs one holds in general?
My beliefs have driven peole to love, hate, kill, save lives, martyr themselves, start wars, persecute, be persecuted, explore new lands, exploit new lands, live in self-imposed exile, exile others, pass laws, break laws, change laws, change laws back, worship, tithe, testify, argue, debate, preach, proclaim, punish, forgive, and... that's just for starters.
