what is the correct type of font that has to be used in an essay, is it times new roman, or arial?

I think it is Times Roman (take a look at agreements, contracts, etc).
I personally would go for Arial.

it probably doesn't matter, but times will take up less space than arial

unless specified, it doesnt matter, so long as you can read it
