Holmes learned from Ali by being his long term sparring partner but would he have learned enough?
Both had great jabs, durability and stamina. For me Ali was the more superior boxer and I reckon he would take a points decision every time.
I know they did fight but this is a prime for prime question.

Holmes - W 69 (KO's 43) TF 75 - W pct 92% - KO pct 57% - wins over Witherspoon, L. Spinks, Norton, Ali, Mercer, Berbick, Weaver and Shavers - KO'ed by Tyson (Holmes was 40 yrs old) - #27 ranked fighter
Good chin/expert boxer
Some experts say that Holmes was robbed twice when he fought M. Spinks. Look at the other side, it has been said that Holmes got the benefit of a decision when he fought Witherspoon and C. Williams.

Ali - W 56 (KO's 35) TF 61 - W pct 92% - KO pct 57% - win over Bonavena, Frazier[2], Liston{2}, Ellis, Norton, Chuvalo Foreman and Patterson[2] - KO'ed by Holmes (Ali was 40 yrs old. - #2 ranked fighter
Greatest chin ever add great will/heart
Won 1960 Olympic Gold medal at Lt Hwy wt
Great boxing skill and athletic skill/prowess

Both fighters have a lot in common, same winning and KO percentage, both were KO'ed at forty and both had a championship fight (both lost) at 40. Both fought and beat Shavers, Norton, Evangelista and L. Spinks. Ali in a 15 rd clear cut unanimous decision the boxing (power hungry) public may not appreciate.

This would be a much tougher fight for Ali than people realize. Holmes had a piston-like left jab and a good right hand. Ali had the better footwork and overall boxing skill but i think Holmes' jab would get him closer to Ali than is normally the case and he would land some good right hands against Ali. Both had good chins so a KO is not likely by either man. This is a tremendous matchup and i think Ali's speed and ring smarts may be the difference in him winning a very close split decision over Holmes.

This is a very very tough fight. Ali was the more gifted boxer...he was faster and had more skill and better reflexes. Technically, they were about the same, as both had great boxing brains. Holmes had the best jab, as it had more authority than Ali's. Both had great chins and durability and both definitely had the guts. I would also give Larry the edge in punching power (right hand) although neither were devastating punchers. I think Ali (a 1960's Ali) would edge Holmes on a very close decision. I personally believe that these were the 2 best boxers in Heavyweight history.

Definetly a boxing match here with two fighters known for their great jabs. Ali has a better chin than Holmes and they are about equal in the power department. Ali has the superior footwork although Holmes isn't too shabby in that department. Holmes would win some rounds and fight a very tough fight but in the end Ali would win the 15 round decision.

This is a very good question so here goes. The Ali that just be for he was striped of his title for not going to the war in Vietnam would have beat the Larry Holmes that beat Kenny Norton who he beat for the title in 1978. This would have been a classic chest match because these two spared each other all the time so they knew each other very well know knock downs just the pure sweet science

This is NO slam dunk for Ali, by any means. If Ali wins the first fight, Holmes wins the rematch, with Ali squeaking by a decision in the rubber match.

Teacher beats the student. Ali wins by 15 round unanimous decision.

Ali would have been a bit more cunning i think.
A bit too slippery, Ali would find it easier to hit Holmes than Holmes hit Ali...
