My friend asked me if you could clip a puppies cord with a baby nail clipper? Can you?

OMG DON'T TOUCH IT!!!

Do not let your pets breed if you are not bright enough to find out what to do with the babies before hand. This is a major problem ignorance breeding more ignorance with pets and people.!! Too bad we can't euthanize in some of the human overpopulated areas.!!

ADDED:

St Lady - I have had overly large litter where the momma doesn't get to it all right away but given 24 hours she will catch up and take care of it. LEAVE THEM ALONE.

The mother does not have to do this, some breeds are actually incapable of doing it on their own.

Do not use a nail clipper.

Use a regular pair of scissors. First sterilize them in boiling water, you can also sanitize them in rubbing alcohol.

When the pup is born and the sac is off and the puppy is breathing well, the blood that is in the cord should be pushed toward the puppy. Then, cut the cord about 2-3 inches out from the belly, depending on breed. It is fairly easy to tell where to do it, it is thinner in the area you would cut.
Then, pinch it shut for a minute.
Then, give the pup back to the mom for a good thorough bath.

This will not harm the mother or puppy. But the sac must get off the head first, get the airways cleared and then have mom start helping you clean the puppy.

A couple more things.
Always wash hands thoroughly before each whelp and in between.
Sanitize your scissors between every pup.
Have lots of rags and papertowels on hand, I keep baby wipes on hand for myself if I need to clean up my hands while assisting the mother. Then I don't have to get up and leave her alone.
Have all of the whelping supplies handy, sterilized/clean, and have plastic trash bags for all those papertowels and placentas and messy stuff.

A baby nail clipper is far to small and using a normal scissors will give the cleanest cut.

If you need any more info you can post the dog's breed.

NO Way!!!!!! You need to tie the cord off in two areas , one about 1.5" from the belly and then the next 1.5 inches further down towards the afterbirth. Wait until there is no pulse in it and cut with a sterilized pair of very sharp manicure scissors that will not crush the cord. More puppies die from infected umbilical cord in the first week then people realize. Why isn't the mother doing this!!!!????? Too much interference is not a good thing. I only get involved if the mother has an extremely large litter and becomes overwhelmed or she doesn't do it herself.

The mother will usually do this herself. If she is not, then I would contact your vet because it is a natural instinct for the mother to do this, although new moms sometimes don't get it the first time around. I would use the nail clipper(if that is all you have and its ok from the vet) if it was cleaned as well as you can, best to see what it the right product from your vet. Good luck.

The mother usually bites the cord to release the puppy from her.

The part that's left needs to dry up and fall off on its on so that it doesn't get infection!

No Never. The mother will take care of it herself and what is left should stay there until nature takes it's course and falls off. If there is a problem at delivery and the mother is not doing her job taking care of the cords then call a vet. Never do it yourself or you risk infection or the puppy bleeding to death.
