Ativan (lorazepam) is part of the pharmaceutical group benzodiazepines. Primarily created as mild anticonvulsants in treating epilepsy, they are more commonly used in treatment for anxiety and panic disorders.
Specifically, benzodiazepine concentrates on modulating the neurotransmitter GABA, which is reponsible for the inhibitory function of the Central Nervous System (CNS).
Benzodiazepines are also available in injectible form and are used pre-surgery to induce coma.
They are a relatively safe class of drugs, where an overdose won't kill, however, when combined with other substances, such as alcohol in high dose, the inhibitory qualities of the drug can prevent the body from rejecting (puking) and result in fatal alcohol poisoning.
Benzodiazepines are tremendously addicting and after regular use, stoping abruptly can provide fatal results.

This medication is used to treat anxiety. Lorazepam belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines which act on the brain and nerves (central nervous system) to produce a calming effect. This drug works by enhancing the effects of a certain natural chemical in the body (GABA).
this drug may also be used to reduce the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, to prevent nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy, and for sleeping trouble (insomnia).

Ativan ( Lorazepam) is an anti anxiety medication used to calm you down. It cause drowsiness and to feel as if you are drunk. Normal dose is anywhere from 1mg-10mg day. It is an abused drug because it is like Valium. Long term use can cause addiciton. If he just used it one time he is probably OK however there is a reason why he chose to "get high" and I would monitor that closely.
